Off site wine storage is a must. For fortified protection of overflow vintages, look no further than the Presidio Wine Bunker, San Francisco's only for-rent underground wine storage and an unusual architectural and historic gem .
After the military vacated the Presidio in 1994, the building stood empty until Christo Kasaris found the space in 2003. As the Presidio has aged and nature has reasserted itself over structures, many of the bunkers above ground have taken on the evocative air of medieval ruins, and the Wine Bunker is no exception. The worn concrete walls, iron rings for tying mounts, circular court where cannons were once stationed and near-wild living roof (an early example of the green building technique that contributes to the ideal wine storage climate) make the bunker look just foreboding enough that you could easily miss it on a trek through the park grounds. Inside, the bunker's climate naturally stays at an ideal temperature of 55 to 59 degrees with humidity . Because of the bunker's thick walls no additional climate-control system is required, making it as eco-friendly as it is perfect for wine maturation .
In an ironic twist, gunpowder and wine share almost identical storage needs. They both require steady humidity and temperature and must be free from light and vibrations. The Army had those conditions in mind when it built the bunkers in the late 1800s. The bunkers are buried beneath 25 feet of dirt, and are constructed with walls up to 3 feet thick to protect the contents from earthquakes, bombings and the drafts, chill and dampness from the near-perpetual fog at the Presidio. Wine units at the Presidio Wine Bunker start at $75 monthly for a small locker, Larger spaces are available . Rentals includes use of the bunker tasting room, decorated with historic images of the Presidio during its military peak.
Presidio of San Francisco (originally, El Presidio Real de San Francisco or The Royal Fortress of Saint Francis) is a park and former U.S. Army military fort on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula in San Francisco, California, and is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
It had been a fortified location since September 17, 1776, when New Spain established the presidio to gain a foothold in Alta California and the San Francisco Bay. It passed to Mexico, which in turn passed it to the United States in 1848 as part of a 1989 military reduction program under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, Congress voted to end the Presidio's status as an active military installation of the U.S. Army. On October 1, 1994, it was transferred to the National Park Service, ending 219 years of military use and beginning its next phase of mixed commercial and public use.
Presidio Wine Bunkers provides the perfect wine storage environment. Situated in the beautiful Presidio National Park with breathtaking panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay, Presidio Wine Bunkers has the city's only underground wine storage vaults available for individual wine collectors. Our facility now provides the optimal temperature and humidity levels for the professional, long-term cellaring of your precious liquid assets. These historic bunkers are now open for private and commercial use, and can accommodate anywhere from a few cases to thousands of them.
As with most of the historic Presidio properties, the Kasaris family must abide by a strict set of preservation rules: No holes can be made in the walls, paint colors must
be from a preapproved period-appropriate list, original doors and hardware must be kept wherever possible. The wine bunkers are located 1430 Compton Road San Francisco west of Highway 1 on Rob Hill and are part of the Stotsenberg and McKinnon batteries. For our new Wine Bunker tenants the labyrinthine layout of storage lockers can be a bit spooky until they're used to the low light and catacomb ambience.
